what is a professional pet sitter

What Is A Professional Pet Sitter?

Today we’re going to discuss what exactly a professional pet sitter is in this day and age as well as what they do. Having an understanding of what professional pet sitters do allows for establishing their important role, as well as separating them from a pet boarder or dog walker.

what is a professional pet sitter

It’s no secret that there was once a time that “pet sitter” meant the 13 year girl who lives on your street and takes care of your dogs while you’re away. But with innovations in business and technology, the term “pet sitter” has taken on a whole new meaning.

The pet sitting industry in and of itself is worth upwards of 62.75 BILLION dollars, with 65% of U.S. households owning a pet. With numbers like those, it’s no wonder why companies dedicated exclusively to pet sitting are growing and thriving.

What Does A Professional Pet Sitter Do?

In short, a professional pet sitter is a person that comes to your home while you’re away to take care of your pets. The length of time is usually up to the company – as some companies charge per length of time while others offer “untimed” visits in that they stay for as long as it takes to get the job done.

While a pet sitter is at your home, they’ll complete tasks such as:

  • Feeding
  • Watering
  • Playtime, exercise, and walking (if requested)
  • Cleaning litter boxes and other pet waste.
  • Administering pet medication (if needed)
  • Light chores such as watering plants, getting the mail, and taking out trash.
  • Providing lots of love and snuggles.

It’s the overall goal of professional pet sitters to provide top quality care for your pets while they enjoy the comforts of home, as well as ensuring everything is okay with the client’s home itself.

How to hire a Pet Sitting and Dog Walking Company

Will I Get To Meet My Pet Sitter Beforehand?

While some pet sitting companies operate differently than others, most of the time you will get to meet your pet sitter before they care for your pets. This is for two reasons:

  1. To put the client’s mind at ease so they know who is coming into their home
  2. To allow the pet sitter to meet the pets beforehand to ensure everyone gets along as well as to get introduced to the pet’s routine

Pet sitting companies want you to trust them and feel at ease while you’re away, so most of the time there is a complimentary consultation offered when you book.

Why Should I Use A Professional Pet Sitter Over Other Pet Care Options?

There are a number of benefits to using a professional pet sitter over other pet care options such as non-professional pet sitters and pet boarders. Let’s break them down:

  • Pets experience reduced stress and are happier overall being at home than being somewhere else like a boarding facility or someone else’s home.
  • Exercise, diet, and playtime routines are uninterrupted – most pet sitters can come over at or close to normal routine times, whereas boarding facilities may feed all the animals at once at a time of their choosing.
  • No travel trauma for your pet by moving them from your home to somewhere else
  • No need to call an untrained person to watch your pet
  • Peace of mind knowing that a trained professional will be caring for your pet and watching over your home.

Lastly, it’s important to note that while professional sitters are not only trained, they are bonded and insured through their company. This means if any emergency arises with your pet, you will be covered. While emergencies rarely happen, they can and most certainly do occur.

Overall, the pet sitting industry is growing larger and larger everyday, and companies are constantly looking to improve their business and services as well as hire the best individuals they can find.  By hiring a professional pet sitter you’ll have complete peace of mind knowing that a qualified person is taking care of your pet and home while you enjoy time away.

Cat Sitting Vs. Cat Boarding

Cat Sitting Vs. Cat Boarding

Cat Sitting Vs. Cat Boarding

What’s The Difference Between Cat Sitting And Cat Boarding?

To all my cat pet parents, this one’s for you! So, you’re about to go on vacation (woohoo!), but there’s one small problem.  Who’s going to take care of your cat while you’re away? And what TYPE of care will you need? Visits 3 times a day + a sleepover? Or maybe just one visit a day? Will your cat stay at your home or be boarded in a facility?  Today we’re going to break down cat sitting vs. cat boarding to help you quickly and easily figure out what type of cat care is best for you and your fur baby.

What Is Cat Sitting?

Cat Sitting, by definition, is “the act of caring for a cat in its own home while the owner is away.” So, whenever we talk about cat SITTING, this will always imply that the cat will be happy and tucked away in their own home versus in a facility. This is one of the largest distinctions between cat sitting and cat boarding.

What are the benefits?

Studies have shown that cats are happier and calmer when staying at-home in a familiar environment. Additionally, their daily routines can go uninterrupted, the risk of illness exposure is minimized, and there’s no travel trauma for your kitty.

What does a cat sitter actually do?

A cat sitter is going to be in and out of your home while you’re gone, so it’s important that you have a good understanding of their duties. A typical cat sitter will complete tasks such as feeding, watering, cleaning litter boxes, administering medications (if needed), and most importantly – providing lots of love and care!

So now that you know what a cat sitter does, you just have to decide how many times a day you would like them to visit your cat. Does your cat eat once, twice, or even three times a day? Is your cat more solitary or very attention-loving? Asking yourself these types of questions can help you decide how often a cat sitter should be coming over to give your cat love and care.

Trusty Tails Pet Care

What Is Cat Boarding?

Cat boarding is when you take your cat to a facility to stay while you’re away on a vacation. Think of it like a “cat hotel.” There will be other cats there, but your cat will get their own special room with all of their amenities like food, water, toys, etc.

What are the benefits of cat boarding?

Your cat will have round the clock, 24/7 care which they may not have with cat sitting. They’ll get lots of playtime and care with a multitude of caregivers while you’re away. Your cat will have their own private area to stay and relax as well.

What does a cat boarder do?

While your cat is boarded, they might have a number of different caregivers. These people will frequently check-in on your cat to ensure they are getting their meals, fresh water, and are in a happy mood. Some facilities might have a special play room where the cats can come out, walk around, and play with toys.

So now that you know what cat boarding is, you have to decide if 24/7 round-the-clock care is right for you and your cat. Ask yourself if your cat will be able to handle being in a new environment. Think about whether or not you’re comfortable with your cat having multiple caregivers, or prefer only one.

Comparing and contrasting the pros and cons of both cat sitting vs. cat boarding will ultimately help you make the best decision for your cat. You, as a cat owner, know your cat and their personality better than anyone. Only you will be able to make the best choice for your cat. But no matter which care option you choose, your cat will be so excited for you to return – as they prefer your love and care the most!

Problems with hiring a dog walker from a diretory

The Problems With Hiring A Pet Sitter From An Online Directory

In this day and age there is an app for everything.  In the pet sitting industry we have a number of websites and apps dedicated to hiring freelance pet sitters such as Rover.com , DogVacay.com, and Care.com. Plus, many of these freelancers tend to be much cheaper than professional pet sitters. Sounds like a smoking deal, right?Well, we’re here to tell you that it may not be all it’s cracked up to be. Professional pet sitters still continue to have a number of advantages over freelancers.  Let’s talk about what the problems with hiring a dog walker from an online directory.

Lack Of Experience

An individual listed as dog walker from online directory most likely are not pet sitting as their career. For a professional pet sitter, yes, pet sitting is their career! This means a professional pet sitter day in and day out are working with pets from all walks of life and have most likely seen everything.

Professional pet sitters are a lot of the times trained in Pet First Aid and CPR, whereas a freelancer may not be.  A professional pet sitter will be experienced in administering medication and will know what to do in the event your pet needs veterinary care. They will also always have a backup solution in case of an emergency.

Freelancers may only have no or very little training.

Lack Of Commitment

Like I said before, most freelance pet sitters do pet sitting on the side for extra income, whereas pet sitting is the primary source of income for a professional pet sitter.

What does this mean? A freelance pet sitter may be tempted to blow off the job or not do their best work. They may rationalize this with thoughts that they don’t particularly NEED the job, or maybe they’ll have other conflicts that will take priority.

With a professional pet sitter, this is never the case. Professional pet sitters are committed because after all, this is their livelihood. They will not only be there for every single scheduled visit, but they will take the proper time and care to ensure gets everything that it may need.

Professional pet sitters are organized (in that your keys will always be safe and sound!), and are extremely dedicated to ensuring the satisfaction of both you and your pet.

Lack Of Availability

What happens if one day during the summer you want to take a spontaneous road trip but your pet sitter is unavailable. Now you’re on the hunt again to find somebody to take care of your pets – ugh!

With a professional pet sitting company, there will almost always be someone available to come care for your pets, even if it’s not your usual sitter. Professional pet sitting companies will usually have a staff of a number of qualified pet sitters that will be able to come on short notice.

The bottom line is that having a freelance pet sitter may not always be convenient, and can sometimes turn into more of a hassle than it’s worth.

They Might Not Have Enough (Or Any!) Insurance Coverage

It’s important to note that professional pet sitting companies are insured and bonded.  While freelance pet sitters may be covered under the website they are listed on, please understand that this insurance is very limited and most of the time, non-inclusive. It is quite rare that a freelance pet sitter will be covered under their own policy.  A professional pet sitting company will have top quality insurance, bonding, and workman’s compensation to put your mind at ease, should anything happen.

The Bottom Line

We understand that some pet owners are on a budget, which can make freelance pet sitters seem enticing and good enough. But, with your pet’s safety in mind and your home in mind, you just want to be aware of your options and understand the full picture.

Saving the couple extra bucks per day on a freelance pet sitter is not worth the ambiguity, potential inconvenience, and lack of piece of mind that can come with it. With a professional pet sitting company, they are dedicated to ensure that your pet sitting needs are taken care of in the smoothest way possible. And they will always be there when you need them.

What Does A Dog Walker Do?

Are you asking yourself “What Does A Dog Walker Do?”  I know it may seem pretty simple, just take the dog out to go the bathroom, but there is actually a lot of thought Curious as to what happens during a dog walk with a Trusty Tails Hoboken Dog Walker? Here are just a few topics that come to mind:

what does a dog walker do-

We Note Your Dog’s Personality

Some dogs are shy or protective of their home.  Some dogs absolutely love anyone they meet.  A dog walker has to be prepared for every single type of dog personality.  Understanding a dog’s personality and reading their body language is most important when getting a dog ready to go out the door.  Each dog’s personality is different and this means that not all dogs may mix well together.

We Check Your Client Notes and Profiles

Our online scheduling system allows us to review all the apartment details, instructions, and pet notes from the client before we even enter the apartment.  These details are wonderful and help us to be prepared for my job before I am even there.

We Provide Food, Water, Cleanup

We always check the water bowl to make sure it is clean and there is fresh water.  We put out breakfast, lunch, or dinner, if instructed to do so.  Sometimes, while mom and dad are out, a dog or puppy can get into some trouble.  Upon arrival to the home, it’s our job to ensure all is as it should be in the apartment.  If there is an accident , cleanup is necessary, and we are here to help.

We Check Collars and Harnesses, Put On Booties, Coats

Before a walk can even begin, walkers need to become familiar with the different collars and harnesses available.  We ensure the dog is properly fitted in the collar or harness so that a walk can be a safe as possible.  If you leave the items out, we will also make sure that your dog is dressed correctly for the elements of weather by putting on booties to prevent them from the dangers of the salt during a snow storm.

We Provide Socialization For Your Dog

Our favorite part about dog walking is the socializing with other dogs.  Whether it is walking with 1-2 other Trusty Tails clients on the walk, or meeting a new friendly dog on the street.  Dogs are pack animals and just love meeting other furry friends and saying hello by sniffing a good butt.

Length of the Dog Walk

Walks are usually 30 minutes, but can be 45 minutes to an hour too.    We prefer to exercise a dog by walking them around town, but are happy to take a dog to the park at the owner’s request.   Dogs, of course, are usually going to do their business when they are out and about town.  It’s our job as the walker to clean up after the dog.  This ensures our beloved Hoboken remains clean and tidy as it should be.

GPS Tracking, Alerts and a Personalized Note

The walks are GPS tracked in real time. Walkers are monitored and clients receive an email alerting them to when the walk begins, and again when their dog has been returned home safely.  The client also receives a note from the walker detailing the journey they had during the walk.  A client never has to worry!

In Home Pet Sitting vs. Boarding in a Kennel

Have you been thinking about that Bahamian Cruise? Or maybe backpacking across Europe? You might be hesitating because you don’t know what to do with Milo and Mitsy while you’re gone.  In this article, we list out some advantages and disadvantages of in-home pet sitting vs boarding in a kennel.

pet sitting vs. boarding

Advantages Of Boarding At A Kennel?

  •  It’s a secure environment that has medically trained staff on hand for most of the day.
  • Your pet will most likely be fed, walked and exercised at designated times.
  • It’s a cost conscious option.
  • No one is coming and going from your home while you are away.

Disadvantages Of Boarding At A Kennel?

  • Your pet is crated all day except for potty breaks and possibly a short amount of play time.
  • Your pet will most likely be alone from 7pm til 7am in most kennel environments.
  • Your pet will not receive individualized attention.
  • It can cause undue stress to your pet.
  • Kennels can be breeding grounds for diseases that are not fully protected by immunization.
  • Your pet is required to have additional vaccines that you might not have considered.
  • No one is watching your home while you are away.

  • Service follows your pet’s routine, not the pet sitter’s.
  • Your pet gets to stay in the comfort of his own home where the sights and sounds are soothing not stressful.
  • Your pet is not exposed to disease or other animals that may be aggressive or dangerous.
  • Your pet gets to roam his house freely or be crated in his OWN den not a crate in a crowded noisy environment.
  • GPS tracking with Pet Check Technology! You know exactly where, when and how long your pet is being cared for and walked.
  • Email alerts each time your pet sitter arrives and departs from your home.  In this day and age, you can never be too safe

games to play with my dog in the snow

Fun Snow Games To Play With My Dog Outside

Most dogs love the outdoor activities: running around, playing with toys, and chasing birds are just a few of the activities that dogs LOVE to partake in. However, when it gets to the Winter time and snow starts to fall, these activities are a little harder to do. But, there are a ton of fun snow games that you can play with your dog instead!

When it snows, this can add a whole new element to your dog’s play time routine. Today we’re going to get creative by thinking of a few innovative games that you can play with your dog in the Winter season.

Snowball Fights

It’s no secret that dogs love to chase things. Having a snowball fight with your dog is a great way to work on your throwing arm, while getting your dog some exercise.

Either your dog will chase the snowballs, or even chase you – which is endless fun for both you and your pup. When making your snowballs, just be careful to use soft snow free of debris, and not to pack them too tight. We don’t want any injuries happening to anybody!

Once you get your mound of snowballs, gently toss them at their dog and watch he or she go crazy! A great variation of this game is to make a little harder packed snowballs, and then toss them high in the air. Your dog will love jumping to try to catch these.

Dogs love to bury things and then dig them up again. So why not use the snow to recreate this little game? Take your dog’s favorite toy, treat, or ball and hide them in the snow. Then you can tell them to go find them! This game is great because it exercises both your dog’s mind and their physical being.

For dogs that aren’t super great at seeking, you can give them hints on where to look to make the game even more enjoyable. However, keep track of everything you’re hiding, as you don’t want it to get lost until the Spring.

It’s not always a good idea to play this game while the snow is falling, either. This can make it increasingly difficult for your dog to seek.

Winter Hiking

Hiking is one of the best activities to do with your dog, even when it isn’t cold or snowing outside. However, hiking in the snow can add a new challenge to your dog’s regular exercise routine, as well as your own.

It’s safe to say that trekking in the snow can be much more difficult than regular ground. So, you and your dog will have to use extra strength and in turn – burn more calories! Dogs love to experience new places and smells, and hiking is one of the best way to do this.

Plus, there are a ton of hiking trails that are absolutely beautiful in the Winter. Consult Google or the newspaper for some breathtaking hiking trail hotspots.

Whatever You Choose, Safety Is Key!

Playing with your pup in the Winter and in the snow can be lots of fun – but there are some dangers to it as well. Just like humans, dogs are susceptible to conditions such as hypothermia or frostbite.

This is why it’s so important to keep a close eye on your dog’s behavior and physical condition when out in the snow. If it seems like your dog is getting too cold, don’t be afraid to take the playtime inside. You and your dog’s safety is always #1 priority!

So with that, have a fun-filled, playful Winter – just make sure you and your dog are both staying healthy and safe.
