Many of us crazy pet parents dream of displaying a portrait of our favorite pet on the walls of our home, or maybe some of us already do. Due to the trendy Paint and Sip studios that seem to be popping up across Monmouth County, now you can create a memorable masterpiece featuring your very own pet. Paint and Sip parties host group painting lessons while guests wine down by sipping on their favorite wine or other beverage (most studios are BYOB). Many studios in the area now feature pet-themed paint parties where guests spend the course of the lesson painting a portrait of their very own pet.
Don’t think you have the tail for this? Not to worry. Artists will pre-sketch your pet on a canvas from a digital photo submitted prior to the painting event. They will then create a template (think paint-by-number) and walk you through your painting during class. Even for the most artistically challenged of pet lovers, this is a fun way to pay tribute to your pet!

It’s been a long day, long week, long month (cue The Rembrandts’ hit lyric “It hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year”) and feeling deprived of a good hang at a neighborhood establishment (cue the theme song for “Cheers”), but don’t want poochie to miss out either? No fear! Here is the first edition of canine friendly locales in Hoboken, where bringing your furry companion is welcome.
Northern Soul at 577 First Street
With renowned live music and DJs from the East Coast Wednesday through Saturday, rotating art shows and exhibitions of up and coming artists, professional mixologists and bartenders, an extensive list of craft beers, darts, billiards, dancing and laughs, Northern Soul has it covered. Formerly an Irish bar called The Quiet Woman, Northern Soul opened in 2009 to fill a deep need for original live music and art since the demise of many venues in town. Since then, it has been growing in popularity and attracting kindred spirits and warm souls who support the arts, enjoy fine libations, and have a soft spot for our four-legged best friends. Dog owners are welcome to bring their pets seven nights a week to the indoor venue as water dishes, dog treats, are available. Belgium’s Palm and 21 Amendment’s Down To Earth are beer recommends and the Purity Bacon Infused Vodka takes the weekend Bloody Marys up a meaty notch.
D’s Soul Full Cafe at 918 Willow Avenue
Keeping with all things artful, soulful and compassionate, Dwight Thompson and Stephen Bailey insist on creating a neighborhood cafe with the message of great food, community, art, music and animals. With the goal of truly establishing a modern commune, Dwight and Stephen asked 75 residents and friends to choose the name. Equally important was the cultivation of an environment that promotes the arts and unique eats. Like Northern Soul, D’s Soul Full Cafe rotates art shows and exhibitions monthly and hosts live acoustic shows of emerging local and regional talent on weekends. The owners wanted patrons to have an experience with every visit to the cafe. The proverb “good things come in small packages,” comes to mind as this delicious spot occupies the bottom of a brownstone on Willow Avenue. Dogs are welcome seven days a week inside and outside with water dishes and homemade treats provided. You can’t go wrong with the Soul Full Cafe classic grilled chicken, avocado and pesto mayo on a homemade wrap. Relish the Curry Gobbler easily ranks as one of the best sandwiches invented of the 2000s, with slow cooked turkey in a curry buffalo sauce, tomato, kale, Emmental Swiss and apple beet relish on homemade ciabatta bread.
Matt & Meera at 618 Washington Street
East meets West meets Hoboken! The eats REALLY get unique and interesting at this cosmopolitan tandoori grill and continental american oven, serving up a dynamic menu of stateside classics and mediterranean tapas and small plates. The cafe offers seasonal favorites reinvented and reimagined with flavors and ingredients from around the world, headed by Executive Chef Hari Nayak. Noteable menu items include: Naanchos, a bowl of crispy naan chips with melted masala, cheese, chutney, and herbs; Grilled Mushroom and Mint Pizza with portabello, red pepper, mint pesto and homemade mozzarella; and Chili Paneer Relleno, of fresh, house made cheese, queso, poblano peppers and rice. Your pup is welcome seven days a week to the outdoor patio, and water dishes are provided year round. Dog Treats are available, from both supermarket brands and local, homemade chefs.
Honeygrow at 120 Washington Street
Born in Philadelphia and bringing wise people together over wholesome foods since 2012, this made-to-order eatery arrived to large hungry crowds Spring of 2015 in Hoboken. The concept is choosing quality ingredients and having them cooked over high heat for an incredibly delicious and nourishing meal. Both a suggested menu and a create your own are provided; or modify with custom, homemade noodles, rice or lettuce, local vegetables, seasonings and proteins. Top off your stir-fry or salad with signature housemade sauces like Sour Cherry BBQ or Red Coconut Curry, and Sriracha Tahini Tofu or Roasted Strawberry Miso, all prepared fresh daily! If sitting down is not in the cards, grab a fresh-fruit garnished, chocolate chip, honey-kissed smoothie from the Honeybar. Pups are welcome seven days a week to the outdoor patio, with water dishes provided year round. Also Honey Dog Treats are available from the local, homemade chefs.
Stay tuned for the second edition of canine friendly locales coming in January 2016. Until then… Bone Appetit!
Established in 2013, the word on this pier park with new carpeted run is getting around town and the metro area (yes, actually), and for good reason. It’s well maintained, consistently clean, more often than not stocked with doo-doo bags, attracts super owners with friendly pups, is safe and offers a fenced synthetic turf area and it’s adjacent to a traditional grass pier area (nice to have available).
What more could you ask for? Since you asked… Perched on the Hudson River and boasting a knock-out view of the Manhattan skyline, time can fly with or without intention. The benches help and are much needed for the various lifestyled Hobokenites. Providing owners the option to let the doggies get moving, while they can exchange, unwind and bond among themselves. Though constructed in mind for Shipyard residents, all the pros and pluses have quickly spread beyond them.
Improvements and upgrades would include the additions of a water supply, water fountain, a shaded area, a windshield or windbreak barrier, repairing the fence bottom where needed and enlarging the carpeted area to ease through busy times and allow bigger dogs to join in more frequently on the fun. Weekday mornings are calmer with less visitors. Weekends are less structured and can be enjoyably social and bustling.
Everything considered, if you reside near 13th Street and Sinatra Drive, the snags are minor and you and pup will both be in for a treat.
What Does It Mean to Curb a Dog?
Curbing a dog simply means picking up his poop, preventing him from peeing on your neighbor’s property, and just generally being responsible about all matters concerning your dog’s excretion.
Every state has their rules on curbing your dog and understanding the laws in your state and community as well as abiding by them, is important for you, your dog and the community at large. The idea of the phrase “curb your dog” is believed to have its origin in the fact that if dogs walked on the curb, then their waste would fall there where it could be picked up by the cleaners. A few of the laws outlined here are general ones, and are adaptable everywhere including Hoboken, New Jersey.
Different communities have different laws on where dogs are allowed to be walked and/or exercised. This also includes places where they are not allowed to relieve themselves or “answer the call of nature,” so to say. In most places, dogs are allowed to be walked and picked-up after on any public roads, but some do not allow a dog to defecate in specific areas even if the owner intends to clean up after the dog. In Hoboken, the “no-dogs-on-grass” rule is periodically enforced by the city’s Health Department, parks officials and police officers. If you disregard this rule, you will be doing so at your own risk as the fines can be substantial.
Pick Up the Poo
The standard in most places is that once a dog defecates, the owner or the person walking the dog must immediately pick up the waste. They can use a bag, a shovel or anything they choose; the important thing is that they pick up the waste and take it home with them to be disposed of as appropriate. In Hoboken, it is a rule to carry pick-up bags and pick up and dispose of dog waste promptly.
What To Do With the Picked Up Poo
A number of communities have rules on the disposal of pet waste while some are not so explicit in their requirements. Most states or communities generally require that feces be wrapped and put in the trash or that they are flushed, the aim being to prevent the feces from getting into the storm drains and pipes from where it could possibly end up in the water systems resulting in serious health implications.
It is important to note that in Hoboken, it is a law that all dogs must be kept on a leash that is six feet long in all public places. Also, no dogs are allowed on the grass or unpaved areas within the parks or the waterfront walkways.
For dog owners or people walking dogs in Hoboken, see to it that you do not leave your dog unattended while holding conversations, always pick up after your dog and when you see someone not picking up after their dog, politely inform them to do so.
