Understanding Your Pet Insurance Options

My dog, Blue, was recently diagnosed with having mast cell tumors on his body.  I was completely devastated.  The dreaded cancer that is most common in  my dog had.  My very best fur pal and only 9 years young.   My husband and I decided Blue would undergo surgery to have three tumors removed.

Dr. Tudor, along with his entire staff at the Animal Infirmary, were absolutely amazing. Sixty staples and six weeks of healing later, Blue was healed and finally able to walk the streets of town like a normal Hoboken dog.  Life in a cone and walks to the tree and back for 6 weeks straight was just plain awful!  Hopefully, we removed all the tumors and don’t have to deal with this again.

It is important to understand the policy you have taken out for coverage for your pet.  We have always had coverage for Blue through our insurance company.  Unfortunately, with Blue’s age of 9, now considered a ‘senior dog’, we had neglected to bumped the his coverage up to the highest plan available.  The particular plan we had ended up only covering about 1/4 of the costs related to his procedures.

Knowing what I know now, I gave my insurance company a call and tried to increase his coverage.  With a ‘pre-existing’ illness, he was of course denied.  Thankfully, we are able to keep the current level of coverage that we had for the previous years as something was better than nothing.
