NAME: Cloud
TITLE: Tail of Bayonne
How old is your pet? Cloud is now 7 months old!
What breed is your pet? He’s a Border Collie
What are your pet’s special skills? He’s a quick learner, a people pleaser, and a brave pup. Whenever he meets a new dog, he’s sure to say hi to their owners too!
What is your pet’s favorite food? He’s a lover of dairy. He cannot get enough of yogurt!
What is your pet’s favorite toy? People. Seriously, if there’s a toy that means a person has to interact with him, that’s his favorite. He’ll keep trying different toys until he finds one you will play with!
Where is your pet’s favorite place to sleep? By the bed, but not on it. He wants to be nearby, but also ready to greet anyone who might knock!
What is your pet’s favorite activity? Going to new places. We’ve started driving to new parks in Hudson county and now he stands by the car every morning waiting to hop in.
Where is your pet’s favorite place to hang out or walk? Bayview Drive in Stephen R. Gregg Park! The open space is pure joy for him.
What is the most mischievous thing your pet has ever done? When we refuse to play with him, he will look for something we value and hold it in his mouth. Seems like he pays attention to things we normally value but doesn’t touch them until he needs to hold them hostage! My favorite moment was when he brought me my phone after a full day of me not knowing where it was!
How did your pet come into your life? Like all great stories, it started online with an ad. We trekked through 8 states – from New Jersey to Mississippi – in a single day (19 hours!) to get this little bundle of joy. We were on two deadlines: starting a new job in NJ and the breeder’s vacation, so it was quite the journey. And on Cloud’s first roadtrip back, things went extremely well. At first, he wouldn’t stop barking, but when he started panting, we realized this floof ball just needed the AC on blast. After that, this Mississippi boy enjoyed the gentle rumble of the car on the country roads back home.
What makes your pet the best pet ever? His empathy. Whether it is nervous kids or skittish dogs, Cloud adapts to the pups and people around him. He has helped two kids who had a bad first encounter with dogs overcome their fear, and helped a Shiba Inu overcome his shyness at the dog park. He offers something for everyone – and his paw too if you ask!
Why did you decide to enter the Tail of the Year? I wanted to share Cloud, in the hopes to inspire others to bring a furry friend into their life and to share the joy they bring. It is nice to see a community of pet lovers come together to talk about the most endearing aspects of their pets.
How did you prepare for the contest and get votes? We looked through the previous winners, brainstormed with other dog owners, and asked people for ideas. “It takes a village” definitely applied here.
What do you enjoy most about the Tail of the Year so far? That it is such a community effort. There’s such a large diversity of not just pets, but pet lovers. Reading about and seeing other pets and what people shared was an unexpected but welcome part of the experience!
What advice would you give to the next tail of your city? Focus on what you love about your trusty little tail. Don’t worry about what you think they want to hear. A smile and laugh is infectious!
How are you handling your new found fame? Cloud’s gotten many treats and rewards with extra excursions. He’s modest, though, so he doesn’t flaunt it. He just wants to hang out with his friends and have a good time.
If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why? No contest, Cloud wants the powers of elongation man. Oh the things he could reach! For now, he settles for moving boxes and stands to reach higher shelves.
What does it mean to be the Tail of your city? To embody the values and spirit of the community: neighborly, warm, and focusing on the simple pleasures of daily life.
