We’ve compiled some top tips to help keep your pet and your home free of fleas and ticks.
- The most important thing that you need to do as a pet parent is to put in place a plan of action. Your plan of action will depend on your personal beliefs and the philosophies that you subscribe to. Whether you opt for holistic methods or conventional methods, you still need a solid plan in place. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you and vet institute a proper flea and tick prevention plan that best suits your pets.
- Always, always do your research when opting to use any type of chemicals or medicines on your pets. Find out the risks and benefits for using those medicines, whether oral or topical, to your pet and your human family members.
- Stay on your schedule of any medicines you are using to prevent fleas and ticks. Even a few days off your schedule can make your pet more susceptible to infestation.
- Fleas and ticks are more likely to feed on a pet with a compromised immune system so keep your pet healthy. Feed your pet a quality diet and exercise your pet daily. This will help build strong bones and muscles as well as help your pet maintain a healthy weight. Take care to not to over vaccinate your pet as this can overwhelm your pet’s immune system, which will make him less healthy overall.
- Use a flea comb and comb your pet out daily. A quick comb through after your pet has been out of doors is the best.
- Bathe and groom your pet regularly especially if he as skin allergies or you suspect flea infestation. This will keep flea and tick issues at bay, and any infestations will be caught in a timely manner.
- Vacuum your home at least once per week, more often if you have time. Don’t forget to also vacuum your furniture, especially if your pet is allowed on the furniture.
- Spray your pet with essentials oils like peppermint or citronella. This is a natural alternative to flea and tick prevention.
- Wash any linen that your pet has access to once per week in soap and hot water (this includes your pet’s bed).
Remember to always consult with your vet before you try any “at home” or alternative methods to flea and tick prevention.
