All About the Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier, popularly called the Yorkie, is a small-sized dog that originated from Yorkshire, England in the 19th century. They were initially bred to be used in catching rats that were causing damage to materials used in clothing mills. However, this adorable dog with its dark eyes, black nose and hairy head is now a beloved companion in many homes.
Usually, this dog weighs about 7 pounds and stands at 15 to 17.5 cm off the ground to its shoulder level. Some of them may weigh about 4 pounds and these are referred to as “teacups.”
TEMPERAMENT The Yorkie is an adventurous dog that is highly inquisitive and quick both mentally and physically. Even though they enjoy being carried and burrowing into pillows, chasing butterflies and birds is an enjoyable activity for them.
The Yorkshire has very sharp eyes and will announce the presence of a stranger with a sharp bark. They are quite mischievous and they must be taught good socialization skills from an early age.
Despite its small size, this dog can be bossy and stubborn and will not like to stay on a leash except with proper training. They are also very possessive and are not likely to share their toys or favorite chairs with anybody.
ENERGY LEVELS AND TRAITS
- The Yorkie is a very active dog with a medium energy level. Yorkies require a daily walk, as do all dogs, so that they will burn off energy as well as maintain good health. Burning off some energy out of doors will help the Yorkie to stay calm instead of running around all the time and getting into mischief around the home. They do not require a lot of exercise but they do want lots of attention. They shed very lightly and the average life expectancy is 12-15 years.
- They are highly suspicious of new faces but they are generally peaceful dogs that can easily live together with other pets. The average number of litters is four puppies.
- They have a delicate digestive system and should not be fed with things outside their normal diet. Also, they should be well protected from the cold.
