Does My Dog Have Ear Mites?

Your dog relies upon you to help them with many different needs. Food, water, shelter and medical needs are just a handful of them. One such need that you, as a pet parent, should try to keep an eye on is the dreaded ear mite. Ear mites are pests. They can become quite a nuisance to your pet.

Here are some signs to keep an eye open for:

• Shaking heads. If you see your dog begin to shake his head there is a good chance he’s are being pestered by ear mites. Take your pet to the vet and allow them to perform an examination. If your pet shakes his head for too long and with too much force, he can cause damage. The shaking will rupture blood vessels and cause the blood to pool around the tip of their ear.
• Excessive scratching. If your dog is infested by ears mites, those pests can cause some major itchy feelings in their ears. The excessive scratching can cause damage to the ear as well as the ear’s canal. The scratching can cause an infection of the skin. Not to mention, it is frustrating to your pet to feel so itchy.
• Mites can spread. Just because they are called ear mites, do not think they are only contained in the dog’s ear. They will spread to other areas if not treated properly and promptly.
• Allergic reaction. While the average ear mite can be a simple pest to your pet, some dogs can exhibit severe allergic reactions to their presence. This causes much more excessive irritation and skin issues.

If you see your pet suffering or displaying any signs mentioned above, please take him to the vet. Nip it in the bud early and save your pet the needless aggravation. Ear mites are not harmful nor do they spread to humans. So you will really need to know your pet and monitor him for any changes in behavior.
