Does My Pet Need a Companion?
This is a topic every pet owner ponders at least a few times. Is my pet lonely? This question however is not one size fits all. Every pet has their own personality and set of circumstances. Here are a few key points to help you decide.
- If there has been a recent death of one of your pets then, no. You should try and keep their routine and home life as unchanged as possible. Once your pet seems to have adjusted to the loss then, perhaps think it over carefully.
- Dogs are social animals. They really enjoy human companionship and if you have trained them properly and socialized them correctly they should get along with other animals. See how your pet reacts at the dog parks or on walks. Try a few play dates.
- Consider genders. The best type of companion duos tends to be male and female. Then there is no fight for the top alpha dog role. Although, the male is not always top dog!
- And another tip to consider; you should not be leaving your pet home alone for extended periods of time. If you can’t be home to interact with your pet and provide them the companionship they require then perhaps a pet is not the right move for you at this time.
- If you’re heading out to work for a normal work day then your pet should be fine without you. However if you do have a fearful and timid dog who really doesn’t do well on their own then perhaps a companion would be of help. But ensure you are bringing together two pets that can get along while you’re away.
Remember not all pets need nor want another pet around. Sometimes you’re all they need. Don’t force it on them and take it on a case by case basis. Do your research and consult your trusted pet care professionals.
