Pet Costumes: Do's and Don'ts

Costuming your pet can be a cute and enjoyable experience for you, but there are certain guidelines to follow so your pet is happy too. Here are some do’s and don’ts for costuming your pet this Halloween.

Do:

  • Make sure your pet’s costume is safe. You don’t want anything constricting, parts and pieces hanging off, anything that can present itself as a choking hazard.
  • Be sure to try out the costume before Halloween night. If your pet seems anxious or uncomfortable, or even allergic, find a new costume, or consider letting them wear a festive bandana.
  • If your pet wants to wear a costume, be sure to keep their eyes and ears clear of any costume pieces. Sight and sound are vital to any animal, and if any of them are obstructed, it could be dangerous and upsetting for your furry friend.

Don’t:

  • Never force your pet into a costume if they seem uncomfortable with it. Most pets prefer going “au natural”, but some do enjoy throwing on a fun costume. Work with your pet to find out what they like, and take it from there, using your best judgement.
  • Don’t forget about harnessing or leashing your pet. Costumes can look cool and be efficient too. Remember to have a hole for accessibility with a collar or harness, in order to leash your pet.
  • And of course, don’t forget; everyone should be having fun on Halloween! Enjoy the night with all the children, families, and furry additions. Pets can be great at parties, in groups of trick-or-treaters, or even greeting the door to give out the treats! Keep in mind your pet’s limitations, and don’t overwhelm them.
