Interview with Dog Trainer & Owner at Ted's Dogs
How did you get started working with animals?
I decided I wanted to be a dog trainer because I love working with animals. I just knew I wanted to have this as a career. It’s something I just totally love.
What educational experience, professional certifications or memberships do you have?
I am a certified dog trainer through Animal Behavior College. I have been training full time since 2008. I volunteered at the Bloomfield Animal Shelter from 2006 to 2011 working with the dogs there.
What should dog owners look out for in a dog trainer?
Dog owners should really look out for dog trainers who use harsh methods. Dog trainers should not be heavy handed with the dogs they train.
What dog training methods and philosophy do you use?
The overall goal with all of my sessions is to teach people how to take a leadership role in their dogs life. I can teach dog owners how to have want them to behave in all environments. I use positive methods based on affection and toys and treats as rewards. In order to have a great relationship with our dogs we need 3 things from them Trust, Love and Respect. Usually 1 of these is missing when people are having problems with their dogs.
Do you offer a guarantee?
I train people how to interact their dog. I cannot guarantee that the people will follow through with the training, so I do not offer a guarantee. The training I offer is more for the people than their dogs.
How do you make the learning fun for the dog?
By finding out what each dog is motivated by and using that as a reward for good behavior.
What services do you offer?
My dog training services are all one-on-one. We will help to make behavior in your dog better and help you improve communication with your dog.
What types of cases do you take on or refer out?
I take all cases involving dogs. There is no dog I will turn away.
What areas do you service?
In New Jersey, we service: Ridgefield, Ridgefield Park, Bogota, Englewood Cliffs, Little Ferry, Montclair, and Edgewater.
