The Truth About 5 Common Cat Myths
There are so many myths about cats, it is hard to even know where to begin! Here are the Top 5 Myths About Cats that are completely untrue!
1. Cats have 9 lives. Nope, just one! Yes, they have good survival instincts, but they only have one life. This myth is very old, which is probably why it is ingrained in our minds. Just remember, it’s not true!
2. Cats always land on their feet. Who came up with this one? While cats often land on their feet, this doesn’t mean it will be without injuries. Although cats can sometimes survive a long fall, cats can become severely injured while landing on their feet.
3. Milk is good for cats. One of the most common errors about cats is that milk is good for them. Cats are not made to drink the milk of a cow, and many cats are lactose-intolerant. Giving your cat milk could give her stomach problems, including terrible diarrhea. Kittens require milk while they are nursing, but once they are weaned cats should be given water instead of milk. Orphaned kittens should always be given special formula from your veterinarian.
4. Cats are a danger to babies and pregnant women. Cats are often given up to shelters for adoption because expectant parents fear their cherished cat will be too dangerous to have near a new infant. This myth involves the idea that a cat may smother the baby in its sleep or suck out the infant’s air. These tales are so old, and there has never been a recorded death of an infant being smothered by a cat. There is also the rumor that cats pose a danger to pregnant mothers. However, pregnant mothers can still love and enjoy beloved cats as long as they take provisions to protect their health while emptying the litter box. Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease that is spread via cat feces. Thus, it is in the expectant mother’s best interest to have someone else empty the litter box, and if there is no one else to help, she should always use disposable latex gloves.
5. Purring is always a sign of happiness. This is sometimes true, however, no one actually knows the reasons that cats purr. It is known that they frequently purr during times of stress which demonstrates that there are other reasons for purring.
