Dog and Cat Grooming Tools

Choosing Grooming Tools for your Dog and Cat Many of us pet parents would probably love taking our pups or kitties to the grooming salon once a week but let’s face it – most of us simply don’t have the time or money to do so. However, there are grooming tools that every pet parent should have on hand at home to help keeping Fido or Fifi in tip-top shape in between grooming appointments at the salon.

Why should I brush my dog or cat at home? Brushing your dog or cat can be time consuming but it is necessary. Grooming at home prevents tangles and matting, reduces dander in the air of your home and promotes bonding with your pet. Keep in mind that tangles lead to matting and matting can be painful and cause serious skin issues. Grooming at home also keeps you aware of any changes in your pet’s body – for example, lumps, bumps hot spots.

What choices do I have for at home grooming? Rubber brushes will promote circulation while loosening the dead hair and dirt embedded in your dog’s coat. These brushes are typically best for dogs with short hair.

Pin Brushes release tangles on medium and long-haired dogs alike.

Bristle Brushes are great to have on hand for dogs of all hair types and lengths. This brush would be considered a basic brush but not adequate for detangling or de-matting.

Slicker brushes come in different sizes and work best on long-haired dogs, especially those with thick fur. The fine metal bristles are a great tool for detangling the fur.

Blade on a handle combs are essential for the medium-coat dog with fine hair. The long narrow teeth reach the furry undercoat.  This is not intended for longer coated dogs.

Wide toothed combs are best suited for cats and smaller dogs with very sensitive skin. This option puts less pressure on the skin and body of the dog or cat.

Remember, there is no one size fits all combination of shedding tools. You may need to do some trial and error and see what works best for your pet’s coat.
